9:52AM CDT July 12, 2005: Regarding the upcoming Supreme Court nomination, our friend Drudge has the following quotes -- from John McCain, GOP senator from Arizona and the founder of the Gang of 14: "During the campaign, President Bush said he will appoint judges who will strictly interpret the constitution... thinking anything else is either amnesia or ignorance... elections have consequences... whomever he nominates deserves an up or down vote and no filibuster... and an up or down vote is what we will have."
Cajones! Finally, McCain has grown a set! The extreme left makes thair last stand to put their thumbs on our necks, and we can stop worrying if McCain will help them -- he’s on board! Our biggest worry to date has been the possibility of filibuster. We worried that the Gang of 14 would splinter and we would be back into the filibuster fight. Now, we know that McCain will vote to break the filibuster, and I take his statement to mean that he will go Nuclear to break the filibuster.
"The only question that remains in my book is whether the Gang of 14 will hold. It is possible, remotely possible, that the entire gang will hold and there will be cloture to prevent Chucky Schumer’s war."
The only question that remains in my book is whether the Gang of 14 will hold. It is possible, remotely possible, that the entire gang will hold and there will be cloture to prevent Chucky Schumer’s war. However, you need to remember that the Democrats on the Gang of 14 include Daniel Inouye (D-HI) and Robert Byrd (D-Ku Klux Klan), both of whom are extreeme leftists. If our President nominates Janice Rogers Brown (and considering McCain’s statement today, she’s the ideal pick), he will be putting direct pressure on the Gang of 14 to make cloture. I’ve said this before, so please forgive me if I sound redundant.
In my opinion, our President will nominate someone who is guaranteed to test the Gang of 14. He can do this while still being faithful to the Constitution, and in so doing, restore a Constitutional sense of order to the judicial nomination process. If the Gang of 14 holds, and the leftists don’t try to squiggle out on the nebulous "extreme circumstances" provision of their nefarious accord, then we get an originalist on the Supreme Court, and the people win. If the Gang of 14 splinters, and the Nuclear Option is fired off -- with McCain declaring that the nominee will get an up/down vote, you can be sure that a Gang of 14 schism will result in the Nuclear Option -- then the people win as the filibuster is scuttled for our President’s judicial nominees.
Today, it’s raining in Chicagoland, but it’s quite sunny when one looks at the news!
