Blumenthal Lies, Democrat Majority Dies? One Can Hope...

Politicians lie about all sorts of things. This is an axiom of American politics, and in fact, of politics anywhere in the world, at any time in history. Who could forget Bill Clinton wagging his finger at a reporter and stating, forcefully, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky.” However, there is one thing that is the political equivalent of Major John Andre walking to the gallows and placing the noose about his own neck. What’s that? Feeding the people B.S. about your military service. However, a Democrat (is that any surprise) who was looking at a cake-walk to take Christopher Dodd’s senate seat in Connecticut has done exactly that.

Richard Blumenthal, infamous among patriots as a bloodthirsty attorney general who extorted huge settlements from corporations for imaginary violations of the law, had decided to move on up to Washington. As of last week, he polled over 20 points ahead of all GOP challengers. Then over the weekend of may 15-16, the story broke. Mr. Blumenthal has been lauded as someone who had served in Vietnam. He has lauded himself as someone who served in Vietnam.

Speaking to military families in Bridgeport in 2001, Mr. Blumenthal said, “When we returned, we saw nothing like this … Let us do better by this generation of men and women.” In 2008 in Shelton, he said, “I served during the Vietnam era,” he said. “I remember the taunts, the insults, sometimes even physical abuse.”

Mr. Blumenthal lied; or at best, dissembled with consummate skill. While Mr. Blumenthal was indeed in the armed services, he never set foot in Vietnam. In fact, Mr. Blumenthal used deferments; when those ran out, he managed to wiggle into the Marine Corps reserves, and ended up doing such “dangerous” things as organizing a Toys for Tots drive.

At least John Kerry, who trumpeted his service in Vietnam during his 2004 presidential run, actually served in the country. Mr. Blumenthal adroitly avoided service, finally landing a plush reserve assignment that kept him away from combat. He did this while other heroes like John McCain were being tortured at the Hanoi Hilton, and thousands of others, including citizens related to the people he now seeks to represent, died or were maimed in heroic service to our wonderful country.

When questioned about his statements, including those cited above, Mr. Blumenthal feigned a loss of memory. How disgusting. He was caught in a big lie, one that he told solely to score political brownie points with the military veterans for whom he was too cowardly to pick up a rifle and fight alongside.

Does this revelation show Mr. Blumenthal to be unworthy to hold a Senate seat? Will the voters of Connecticut refuse to send Mr. Blumenthal to Washington and instead send Linda McMahon, CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, so that she can take a barbed-wire baseball bat to the budget and body slam cap-and-trade? We shall see. It could be that Mr. Blumenthal lied his way to a GOP Senate takeover. We could only hope for such good to come from Mr. Blumenthal’s evil.
