Paying Tribute to those who Served

Today is November 11, 2004, Veterans Day.  Conservativity and all who make her happen sincerely thank those veterans of armed service for our country.  The United States has many holidays on its calendar, some of which celebrate important things, others of which celebrate less important things.  To this writer, the two most important government holidays are Memorial Day and this one.  Why not Independence Day?  Simply put, were it not for those who fought to obtain and keep our independence, there would be none.

Were it not for those who served in the armed forces, both in times of peace and war, we would have no right to express opinion, especially the vigorous political debate so vital to the success of the Republic.

Were it not for those who served in the armed forces, the evil of Naziism would certainly have subsumed the whole of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.  The Nazis would have wiped out the Jews everywhere except the United States.  Their brand of tyranny made every other system of totalitarian government look benevolent by comparison.  Our brave soldiers, airmen and sailors drove this evil off the face of the Earth and into Churchill’s "ash heap of history."

"Were it not for those who served, Ronald Reagan would have had no leverage to push Gorbachev to the negotiating table, where they eliminated whole classes of nuclear-tipped missiles."

Were it not for those who served, Ronald Reagan would have had no leverage to push Gorbachev to the negotiating table, where they eliminated whole classes of nuclear-tipped missiles.  The Soviets would still be in power, and we would be at grave risk every day.

Were it not for those who served, Afghan women would still be shot in the head in the centers of soccer stadia for talking back to their husbands, who by the way they would have no say in choosing.  This would happen as Osama Bin Laden and Mullah Omar of the Taliban enjoyed some delicious coffee at the executive mansion, as they planned terror attacks.

"Were it not for those who served, Osama Bin Laden would be stronger than ever..."

Were it not for those who served, Osama Bin Laden would be stronger than ever, and the September 11 attacks would have been the beginning of a snowball rolling down the mountain, instead of the catalyst for our brave servicepersons to wipe out every terrorist ever.

Were it not for those who served, Saddam, Uday and Qusay would be playing shooting gallery with live, but soon to be dead, Iraqis as targets, and eagerly writing $25,000 checks to the families of suicide terror bombers who attacked Israeli civilians.  Libya would be finishing up its first nuclear weapon, probably to be used on us, instead of cowering in fear of those who served.

Veterans of America’s Armed forces, we salute you and your heroism.  We owe our freedom and lifestyle solely to you.
