George W. Bush has a logistical problem. He cannot reach around to the dagger in his back. First, John McCain stuck it in, then Trent Lott twisted it and pushed it in some more. McCain is one thing. McCain is out for McCain and only McCain and nobody but McCain matters to McCain. But Trent Lott? The man is supposed to be a conservative! Rush Limbaugh said that both McCain and Lott are playing up to the leftist D.C. press. That seems a tad dubious to me, but so far it is the only reasonable explanation that anyone has floated to date.
You wonder: What did John leave out of paragraph one? Simple. These two have attacked Donald Rumsfeld, our brilliant Secretary of Defense (and I am not saying it because we’re both from the Windy City). The man has directed the military into a double slam-dunk victory, in Afghanistan (now a freely elected republic) and Iraq (freely elected republic on January 20, 2005). He has modernized the military at the same time, and made the most feared and lethal armed force on Earth even more feared and lethal. Thank God, because of Mr. Rumsfeld, we are safer, and in fact can easily repel any attack from any other country on the planet.
"Frankly, if Mr. Rumsfeld were doing defense in a Democratic administration, the press would have founded a religion to worship the man. They hate him for his ideology, not his performance."
Nonetheless, the press, joined in their slander by McCain and Lott, roundly roast Mr. Rumsfeld as if he were a bumbling moron. Frankly, if Mr. Rumsfeld were doing defense in a Democratic administration, the press would have founded a religion to worship the man. They hate him for his ideology, not his performance. Mr. Rumsfeld is a conservative, and a plainly spoken one at that. He does not talk like a politician, he talks like a businessman, which he is. If you are drinking a diet Coke, or using Equal sweetner thank Donald Rumsfeld. Under his watch at G.D. Searle, Nutrasweet was perfected. And no, it is not an evil red-state mind control drug (I can hear Michael Moore grumbling and crumpling up the script for Rumsfeld 9-11).
This is Mr. Rumsfeld’s second tour of duty as Secretary of Defense (he also served under President Ford). He is able, experienced, and does not tolerate what General Patton used to call "horse dung." Donald Rumsfeld brought the defense department up to speed to defend us after 9/11, refusing to be "relocated" from his Pentagon office, notwithstanding the fact that the Pentagon was, at the moment, on fire. The worst that the left-wing press can do is to hunt down the one disgruntled soldier in Iraq to whine to Mr. Rumsfeld about a shortage of armor. This is, by the way, the same left wing voted against when it was presented to the Congress for approval.
Donald Rumsfeld is a brave, able, competent, efficient, excellent leader of the history’s most powerful military machine. He is George W. Bush’s man. But the wimps in the elite left media are unable to attack our President directly, because he has the people’s mandate. So, in lieu of attacking a very popular President, they attack his most effective advisers. Look at the blistering attacks on John Ashcroft and Condi Rice. That, however, is to be expected.
"What is truly confusing is the backstabbing from McCain and Lott...The Democrats are out of power. The President is wildly popular. Why stab him in the back? There is no sense to this."
What is truly confusing is the backstabbing from McCain and Lott. Both of these people are Republicans, or at least they say that they are Republicans. The Democrats are out of power. The President is wildly popular. Why stab him in the back? There is no sense to this. Are these men planning to retire from public service? Is John McCain bucking for Dan Rather’s job? Is Trent Lott planning to join a panel show on Fox News?
There is no sense to this unless this is a tinkling contest; with the senators trying to show that our PResident ought not to take them for granted. Are they aiming for pork? It does not matter now. Laura will have to help unseat the knife from our President’s back. I would say that they should watch out for the payback, but President Bush is not a vindictive or vengeful man.
